Progressive Web Apps That Work Offline

A progressive web app can provide an installable web experience without an app store, but browser and device capabilities vary. We define the supported matrix, document limits, and design fallbacks for unsupported behavior.

Installable Experiences and Service Workers

Installability and caching behavior are designed for the supported browser matrix. Cache rules distinguish static assets, revalidated responses, and data that should not be stored locally. Because service workers and browsers can fail or change behavior, update and recovery paths are tested explicitly.

Offline Behavior and Notifications

Offline behavior is scoped by data sensitivity, browser support, and the user tasks that must remain available. Pending actions, retry states, conflicts, and recovery are made visible. Notification capability is included only for the browsers, devices, permissions, and delivery providers selected and tested.

Browser and Device Limitations

Storage limits, background behavior, installation, synchronization, and update handling vary across browsers and operating systems. These limitations are documented for the selected support matrix, with recovery paths that do not assume local data will remain available indefinitely.

Update Strategy and Fallbacks

When you release a new version, the service worker must update without breaking the user's session. We implement a versioning strategy that checks for updates on load and notifies users when a refresh is needed. We also build fallbacks for unsupported features—if a browser lacks a feature, the app degrades gracefully rather than crashing.

What the engagement can produce

Practical deliverables

Service Worker Design

A document describing cache strategies for every route, including static files, API calls, and images.

Offline User Flow

A diagram showing what the user sees when offline, how they can queue actions, and how sync resumes.

Browser Support Matrix

A table listing which browsers and OS versions are supported, which features are available, and which are not.

Update Release Notes

A template for communicating new versions to users, including what changed and whether a refresh is required.
